worcester_wolves.gifSkouson Harker was the man of the match for the Worcester Wolves as they travelled to the South Coast and beat Worthing Thunder on Sunday evening. Player coach Harker, as always, led from the front as he scored 32 personal points and also added 13 rebounds to lead all scorers in the game.

After the excellent road win at Everton last weekend, the Wolves may have been expecting an easier time against the BBL newcomers and it looked that way as the Wolves went into a first quarter lead at 36 – 28 and maintained this advantage at half time 66 - 49. Both teams seemed content to disregard defence in a really entertaining game as both Harker and the sparkling Harry Disy had contributed 17 each to the Worcester interval total. Disy went on to his highest personal total for the Wolves with 26 and in addition, Justin Brown was having an impressive game. He totally dominated Thunder's big centre Ivanovskis and the Wolves 7ft man did his own double double with 12 rebounds and 18 points.

However, after the Wolves lead peaked at 21 early in the third stanza, Worthing suddenly clawed their way back into things as Jonathon Woods with 29 and Colby Bergman with 26 started to find their range with accurate outside shooting. The Wolves managed to weather this home burst with some clever plays and the third quarter ended with them leading by 11, but the Thunder were not finished. With 4 minutes of the game remaining the advantage to the visiting Wolves was down to just 4 points and the home team were on a huge roll towards a victory but the previously subdued Will Funn, the Worcester playmaker, then showed his mettle. He stole the ball with three crunch time steals and he converted two of them into baskets for himself and supplied another for Harker. The game was now 112 – 103 with just 1.09 remaining and this looked to be enough for a Wolves win, especially as better on court discipline  meant Wolves had all five starting players still available - which had not been the case in any of the previous games this season.

Worthing showed real character in the last 60 seconds of this enthralling encounter and, after their coach Gary Smith had called a timeout, Woods and point guard Ryan Patton scored consecuitive threes and suddenly it was back to a three point ball game. The determined leadership of Harker was to be the deciding factor as he scored the next four points to seal a breath taking second league win for his team in their last three games.

Harker 32, Disy 26, Brown 18, Paez 14, Funn 12, Uzkuraitis 12 were the main scorers for the Wolves as they moved into a play off place for the first time this season. There is no game this weekend and the Wolves play next at the University on Saturday November 15th against bottom of the table London Capitals.
